Understanding the 62TE Transmission: Common Issues, Symptoms, and How We Build Them Better
The Chrysler 62TE transmission is one of the most widely used front-wheel-drive six-speed automatics on the road today. You’ll find it in a long list of Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram vehicles—including the Dodge Grand Caravan, Chrysler Town & Country, Chrysler Pacifica (early years), Dodge Journey, Chrysler 200, Avenger, and even some Ram ProMaster vans. Designed as an evolution of the 41TE/604 platform, the 62TE offers smoother shifts, improved fuel economy, and better drivability—but like any high-production transmission, it has a few well-known weaknesses.
Common 62TE Failures—And What They Feel Like
Even the most reliable transmission gives signs before it fails. Here’s what typically goes wrong inside a 62TE and what a driver might feel when it happens:
1. Torque Converter Clutch Failure
What fails: The torque converter clutch (TCC) lining wears down or the converter itself starts to break down internally.
How it feels:
- Shuddering or vibration at highway speeds (often 35–50 mph under light throttle).
- RPM flare or slipping sensation before the next gear engages.
- In severe cases, metal contamination throughout the transmission.
2. Clutch Pack Wear (2/4, 4/5, Underdrive)
What fails: Over time, the friction plates inside the clutch packs burn or wear due to heat, poor lubrication flow, or debris.
How it feels:
- Delayed or harsh engagement when shifting into drive or reverse.
- Slipping in higher gears (especially 4th–6th).
- Erratic shift timing.
3. Solenoid Pack and Valve Body Issues
What fails: The electronic solenoid block or the hydraulic circuits in the valve body begin sticking or losing pressure.
How it feels:
- Harsh shifts
- Failure to downshift properly
- “Trans Over Temp” message
- Limp-mode operation where the transmission locks into a single gear
4. Pump and Bushing Failure
What fails: The pump may lose volume or the stator support bushings wear, causing pressure instability.
How it feels:
- Whining noise
- Pressure-related slipping
- Inconsistent shifts or extended shift timing
5. Overheating
What fails: The 62TE runs hot, and heat is the #1 enemy of fluid, seals, and clutches.
How it feels:
- Long shift times when the vehicle is warm
- “Hot oil” smell
- Transmission going into limp mode
How We Build a Better 62TE at Superior Transmissions & Auto
A factory-stock 62TE is fine for everyday use, but when they’re rebuilt with weak OEM parts , they tend to fail again. Our rebuild process focuses on eliminating those design weaknesses so the transmission lasts significantly longer. Here are some of the key upgrades we include:
1. Heavy-Duty Torque Converter
We install upgraded torque converters with:
- Stronger lockup clutches
- Improved dampening springs
- Reinforced internal components
This eliminates the common TCC shudder and prevents the metallic debris that often ruins the rest of the transmission.
2. Enhanced Clutch Packs
We upgrade to:
- High-energy frictions
- Increased clutch counts where applicable
- Improved steels for better heat tolerance
These upgrades allow the transmission to hold power more effectively while staying cooler.
3. Sonnax Valve Body & Solenoid Upgrades
We address hydraulic control issues with:
- Reconditioned or replaced valve bodies
- Sonnax sleeve and valve kits to fix pressure loss
- New, upgraded solenoid assemblies
This restores proper line pressure, prevents cross-leaks, and results in smooth, consistent shifting.
4. Pump and Bushing Reinforcement
We correct the pressure instability by:
- Replacing worn bushings with improved versions
- Installing updated pump gears
- Ensuring proper end-play setup
This prevents the erratic shifting and whining noise many 62TE drivers experience.
5. Thermal Management Improvements
Because these transmissions run hot, we include:
- High-temperature resistant seals
- Updated lubrication pathways
- Optional auxiliary cooler (vehicle-dependent)
Heat kills transmissions—so we build them to run cooler and last longer.
6. Updated Internal Components
We install the latest generation components, including:
- Reinforced snap rings
- Upgraded bearings
- Improved one-way clutches
- Enhanced sealing rings
These parts solve many of the durability issues found in early-year 62TEs.
Built Stronger. Built Smarter. Built to Last.
At Superior Transmissions & Auto, we don’t just rebuild a 62TE—we
engineer it to outperform the original. By addressing every known weak point, our upgraded rebuilds are:
✔ More reliable
✔ Smoother shifting
✔ Better cooled
✔ Longer-lasting under real-world driving conditions
Whether your vehicle is slipping, shuddering, or stuck in limp mode, we can bring your 62TE back to life—and make sure you don’t experience those issues again.
